50 years of Computing in South Wales
Date: 22nd May 2008
Venue: Swansea University, Swansea
The BCS is 50 years old and we end this season's events with some reflections on our local history.
Noel Cox and Rod Delamere, who have made huge contributions to the BCS in South Wales and pioneered the development of computing in various companies and public bodies locally, will reflect on some of milestones of the past 50 years. J V Tucker will speak about the Local History of Computing and the launch of the Swansea University History of Computing Collection. The meeting is an opportunity to learn aspects of the fascinating transformation of our society and to meet old and new friends.

Diploma in Company Direction
Dear Members,
You may have seen within a recent BCS magazine iTNow, a flier offering a way towards this Diploma by special arrangements between the Insitute of Directors (IoD) and the BCS.
I have enquired about the scheme and have discovered that currently this arrangement is based in London. However, I have also been invited to see how many people in our Branch are interested, because as some of you may know, the University of Glamorgan runs the courses on behalf of the IoD, and the arrangement may be able to be progressed into Wales.
To further investigate whether this arrangement might be useful to you, please look in www.bcs.org/dircourses, and also go to www.iod.com/boardbasics ,which offers a self assessment (a score of 100% would suggest no further training is required for this level, a lower score that training might be useful ). Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested, so that I may progress this idea further if there is a demand.
The concept is part of the BCS ProfIT Programme, and is an attempt to address the age old problem of IT/IS professionals contributing, and being recognised as contributing, to their business.
Regards - Ralph Miller, Secretary, BCS South Wales Branch
BCS Jubilee Project: 50 Years of Computing in Wales
Dear Members,
As outlined in my latest news letter, we have a jubilee event proposed that we would love to have your input to: This year is the BCS golden jubilee and the South Wales Branch Committee, in common with other branches, we wish to do something to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We're planning to expand the branch web site to create an electronic archive of the history of computing in Wales. We're sure that firms, universities, schools and individuals have all contributed to advances in our profession and to the spread of computing. We'd like your support in creating the electronic archive. We're keen to collect, collate and publish:
* Your memories
* news coverage of developments in Wales
* information about Welsh products, projects or firms in which computing is a major factor
* academic innovations in computing
* and ... anything extra you think paints a distinctively Welsh picture of computing
We won't have the capacity to gather and store physical media or start a museum and we'll be tackling the project as volunteers. We are looking for a small team to run the history project - to be the electronic curators of the web pages and archives. We'd appreciate any offers of assistance in collecting, collating and publishing electronic contributions. John Tucker has said he would be more than happy to chair a curator's team and work on this project etc. if we can find the right enthusiastic people. If you are able to help then please contact John Tucker at J.V.Tucker@swansea.ac.uk, any other committee member or just reply to this eMail with your offers of help and ideas.
If we are able to get the level of input we are hoping for we would also like to then present how this was achieved and what was achieved in an evening presentation / workshop in October. We look forward to hearing from you and discussing your ideas and input
Paul Bulmer, Chairman, BCS South Wales Branch
