Programme for 2007-2008: Christmas Lecture 2007

Title

Roving Around the Planets:

Sending Computers To Do Our Exploration For Us

+ Free entry to Techniquest

+ "Moon Landings, Fact or Fiction" presentation in the Planitarium

+ Other exhibits by local universities

+ Mince Pie & Coffee

Entrance is free and open to both members and non-members alike. This being our annual family event, visitors are particularly encouraged to bring spouse, partner, children, grandchildren, etc.

There is no limit on numbers in the Techniquest exhibition, but admission to the "Roving Around the Planets" lecture and the Planetarium "Moon Landings, Fact or Fiction" shows will be e-ticketed.

Applications for E-Tickets to the lecture itself are now closed as all places have been allocated. However there is still plenty of room in the main Techniquest exhibition space - you'll be able to see the normal Techniquest exhibits and some we've arranged specially for our event. All applications should be made via E-mail to Ralph Millar ( ralphmiller@bwlch.freeserve.co.uk ). Please state the number of places you required.

Synopsis

Dave Barnes ( http://users.aber.ac.uk/dpb/ ) of Aberystwyth University is a veteran at controlling robot explorers and a member of the European Space Agency's ExoMars (see left: artists impression of ExoMars rover) teams. He will tell us about how the computer systems, which allow robot explorers to do their jobs safely, are put together and operated.

There will also be a number of talks in the Techiquest Planetarium on "Moon landings, Fact of Fiction" which will look into the debate about whether or not the Americans did ever land men on the moon.

Also in the exhibition area there will be a number of displays from local universities as well as the usual Techniquest exhibits.
