| Description |
The Virtual Railway is a work process
employing the latest computer technology to integrate the traditional
engineering disciplines required to build a more efficient and
safer railway system. It came into being as a vital tool in the
design of THAMESLINK 2000 one of the most complex rail refurbishment
programmes ever to be undertaken.
This is a key strategic transport initiative intended to enhance
and expand the existing Thameslink network throughout London,
the South East and East of England. It is so vital that it must
function correctly from its opening.
The Thameslink 2000 CAD team input all the design data from
all disciplines into one unified repository. This provided all
the information needed for their advanced simulator which allows
all aspects of the design to be examined by 'driving' trains
through the system. The technology and data are also incorporated
in a special simulator to train drivers for the expanded network
which will emerge.
The whole scheme will be re-deployed on a number of other major
projects during the modernisation of the country’s rail
infrastructure.
