SOUTH WALES BRANCH PROGRAMME POSTER

MAY 2003

AGM and The Mines Records project

turning a paper chase into an award winning system

Joe Dearden, Steve Pennel (The Coal Authority)

Date:       8 May 2003, Thursday
Time:       6.00 for 7.00 p.m. (AGM at 6.00, buffet at 6.30 p.m.)
Venue:       Trevithick Building, The University of Cardiff, The Parade (off Newport Road) Cardiff

One of the Coal Authority's jobs is to keep track of mines, not least to produce reports for people buying houses or seeking planning permission. Demand for this service has more than doubled to 500,000 reports a year in eight years. The Authority worked with services group Cap Gemini Ernst & Young to develop a service including a geographic information system. The contract used a Public Finance Initiative approach, which meant the service supplier took on the development risks. A project with special meaning for IT professionals who work, and live (and buy houses) in South Wales.

BCS Management Award winner
