About RSS Feeds
What is RSS ?
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a technology that allows you the user to be aware of the very latest site updates at all times without constantly revisiting a site. Instead all the latest updates can be delivered straight to your desktop.
The technology is becoming increasingly used by major news sites (such as The Guardian, BBC Online and CNN) and as the amount of information on the Internet grows ever larger it is seen as an ideal technology to filter the information that you are interested in directly to the user.
How can I use RSS ?
First of all you need a news reader, there are many different readers, some browser based, some downloadable applications but in general the all do the same thing as they allow you to subscribe to and receive updates from RSS feeds, turning the feed into a set of readable headlines/bullet points.
Once you have chosen a reader all you have to do is find and subscribe to your chosen RSS feeds to provide your content. Most sites with an RSS feed will display the
icon on their web site (as indeed we do at the bottom of the navigation menu on each page). Clicking on the icon will provide you with the URL that you need to enter into your news reader in order to subscribe to the RSS feed for that site. Some browsers such as Firefox, Opera and Safari, have functionality which automatically picks up RSS feeds for you. For more details on these, please check their respective websites.
Where/How can I get a news reader ?
There are many different News Readers, some web based, others downloadable applications and covering all platforms, nearly all of them do the same job and a wide selection can be found at Google's RSS Directory.
